@BASW_UK #swscmedia I really think so, and think we all benefit from a more egalitarian model. It’s also fun for us to sometimes teach

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia hi all

Ermintrude2 Moo

@SWSCmedia surely it isn’t a dichotomy – can be both!#swscmedia

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

we have had 4 excellent blogs shedding light on various issues… #swscmedia

vickydixon SW Student

@SWSCmedia Hello all. Heres hoping my twit feed can keep up this week :) #swscmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia so in light of EHRC report last week and the ten charged today what’s role of social media in safeguarding

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

so our first question for tonight: Is social media more of a distraction or help in social work and social care education? #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@SWSCmedia as I said, surely it can be both. It is a means to an end, not an end in itself #swscmedia

BASW_UK BASW

@SWSCmedia Yes it has revolutionised communication but not all are necessarily partakers. #swscmedia

vickydixon SW Student

@SWSCmedia is that its application in educating practitioners or the public on what ‘social work/care’ is? #swscmedia

DorleeM Dorlee M

@SWSCmedia Hi all; I’m happy to participate in first half of talk today :) #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@ukequality role in safeguarding important – although it was the BBC (trad media) that opened Winterbourne debate #SWSCmedia

newsocialworker Linda Grobman

I agree it can be both. #swscmedia #swscmedia

GeorgeJulian GeorgeJulian

@SWSCmedia both, depending on who is using and for what reason, oh and probably also depending on IT access #swscmedia

NickBerbiers Nick Berbiers

I cannot break with established tradition so must first say hello to Nushra @BASW_UK, hope all’s well with you. And hello to ALL #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

#SWSCmedia first started using #socialmedia when realised ppl in class getting ova 50 in essays were on FB study group..seemed a no brainer

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia it depends on how it us used as @Ermintrude2 says

GemmaAt_CMHCSWS Gemma Finnegan

@Ermintrude2 I agree, surely SoMe can be complimentary to SW & SC education? Supportive structure around training? #swscmedia

DailyPlanUK Craig McCormick

#swscmedia A great help, IMO. Always learning and finding new perspectives. Fabulous for networking with ppl I may otherwise not have known.

Ermintrude2 Moo

@ukequality a couple of points – don’t discount it but don’t rely on it!#SWSCmedia

GeorgeJulian GeorgeJulian

Hi all, trying participate in #swscmedia Social work education debate and #dpulo Disabled Ppl User Led Organisation one, so skipping #lgovsm

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia the media must not become the message .. Or it becomes like palm held assessment barriers.

leat72 Lou

#SWSCmedia i used it as an academic tool and now i’ve found twitter opens up even more educational possibilities for me to learn

newsocialworker Linda Grobman

Helps to have a clear purpose in mind #swscmedia

copperbird copperbird

@leat72 #swscmedia I think the trick is once people see how it can be useful to them, they will seek to involve others. The more the merrier

BASW_UK BASW

@SWSCmedia Like everything, I guess it depends how it is used but what potential. #swscmedia

444blackcat bc

#swscmedia it can be both but 1 major hurdle is that most teams IT systems r inadequate n outdated

Ermintrude2 Moo

@444blackcat other thing is are we talking about use as practitioners/academics/students – home or office #swscmedia

AmandaClement1 Mandy Clement

#swscmedia I used Twitter to get information for class presentation on technology, got great results from practitioners and other swstudents

jaxrafferty Jackie Rafferty

Want to ask @leat72 what made FB a no-brainer for study? #swscmedia – ‘waves’ hi to all especially those from over the pond

mgoat73 Martin Webber

It’s a means of communication, not a means of education, although it can support it. But it’s much more than that – fun, life etc #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@ukequality trust me, I agree having benefited enormously personally #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

#SWSCmedia with more use of android phones its like an ad memoir,I am conscious of validity and authenticity as in @mgoat73article

BASW_UK BASW

@NickBerbiers Good to meet with another subscriber of established tradition. Hi Nick #swscmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

@leat72 why so with twitter ? #swscmedia

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

If it’s both, does it depend how you use it? & How can it be used to enhance education and learning? #swscmedia

NickBerbiers Nick Berbiers

@Info4Practice @SWSCmedia Gary, you need to use #swscmediahashtag

@SWSCmedia information gathering/curation/making links/connections #swscmedia

DorleeM Dorlee M

#SWSCmedia if we are talking about hurdles…in general, many are afraid of the use of techn and/or afraid of how to integrate ethics & tech

Theresauno Theresa Gallacher

Ermintrude2 Moo

@SWSCmedia bridging gaps between practice and universities #swscmedia

Damo_SW Damo

@SWSCmedia both depending how its used. Fabulous procrastination tool! #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

@jaxrafferty #SWSCmedia well the way other students younger than me were more open to the use of #socialmedia i used to be dead against it

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

Please use the hashtag #SWSCmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@leat72 I think it’s important to remember the issues regarding ethics/confidentiality #SWSCmedia #socialmedia

jonbolton Jon Bolton

#SWSCmedia A help! Big benefits for some of my students #UoDMSc

DorleeM Dorlee M

#SWSCmedia it is a part of our lives, our clients’ lives – we have to make it a part of social workers lives, their education… their work

Theresauno Theresa Gallacher

It provides an opportunity to create a positive self/profession image #swscmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia so if education is s no brainer what about practice ?

BASW_UK BASW

@SWSCmedia Just think it’s important to remember everyone maybe at different levels with it and that’s to be respected. #swscmedia

vickydixon SW Student

@SWSCmedia It requires participation – I tweeted about a conference -> @mgoat73 shared his current work & link 2 a book for ref! #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@DorleeM there is a digital divide though and it is not part of all of our clients’ lives but agree it is society now #SWSCmedia

@Damo_SW Damo
@SWSCmedia both depending how its used. Fabulous procrastination tool! #swscmedia

mgoat73 Martin Webber

@Damo_SW Agreed with that one. It is a fantastic tool to stop you doing what you should be doing! #swscmedia

GeorgeJulian GeorgeJulian

@Damo_SW @SWSCmedia too right it is #procastination #swscmedia but fine line between procastination and reflection ;)

newsocialworker Linda Grobman

@?jonbolton how have you/your students used it #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

@ukequality #SWSCmedia Twitter good cause 140 charecters so to the point and no waffle, good links to other pages &relevant ppl follow U

DailyPlanUK Craig McCormick

@Ermintrude2 #SWSCmedia Very valid and succinct. Info gathering, collation and making informed decisions on the socmed starting points.

Ermintrude2 Moo

@mgoat73 @damo_SW that’s what I meant by two sides! #swscmedia

copperbird copperbird

#swscmedia I think there’s an element of anarchy and user control in social media which sets it apart from more formal modes.

AmandaClement1 Mandy Clement

#SWSCmedia it can be great to enhance knowledge from others by being directed to journals, books and direct experience from practising SW

ajacob200 Ashley J

@SWSCmedia Can educate in the aspect of blogs, e.g.@Ermintrude2 blog on reflection teaches students the importance of reflection #swscmedia

GeorgeJulian GeorgeJulian

@mgoat73 You can positively reframe that as reflection Martin ;) #swscmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

#SWSCmedia has anyon heard of user use of social media say in personalisation ?

Jollercoaster Jo!

@SWSCmedia Both. It can provide valuable insight into other views on things, but only if you are open-minded enough to accept them #SWSCmedia

DorleeM Dorlee M

#SWSCmedia faculty need to be convinced of its efficacy, its usefulness, the fact that it can enhance the relationship w/students & clients

vickydixon SW Student

@Ermintrude2 #SWSCmedia easiest way to stay up to date with current trends/changes re law/policy/politics – ppl check SM regularly anyway

Ermintrude2 Moo

@ajacob200 Thanks! I also think we can all learn from each other far more #swscmedia

jaxrafferty Jackie Rafferty

@jonbolton Does #SM helping students have any relationship to whether the educator is on board doi you think? #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

@ukequality #SWSCmedia I came across twitter cause of problems in supervision,it was good to be able to bounce ideas of others as scenarios

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

@ukequality Tonight we’re focused on education… We’ll have a separate session on practice… #swscmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

@copperbird like the idea of soc media as anarchic and power tool for self #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

#swscmedia q for students – does having your lecturers online make you feel more inhibited/concerned?

jonboltonJon Bolton

@Ermintrude2#swscmedia q for students: does having yr lecturers online make u feel more inhibited/concerned?”@GillJGrant @Stephanie_Munn

jaxrafferty Jackie Rafferty

Agree x 10 MT @DorleeM#SWSCmedia it is a part of our lives, our clients’ lives, have to make it part of social workers lives

GemmaAt_CMHCSWS Gemma Finnegan

@ukequality Only between personal assistant and client, though I believe service user was trying to encourage SW to as well. #swscmedia

Jollercoaster Jo!

@SWSCmedia As a student I found it was a great way to find out how practices varied in different LAs #SWSCmedia

ukequality Donald Macaskill

@leat72 so s good source of info ? #swscmedia

leat72 Lou

@Ermintrude2 #SWSCmedia Im very aware to honour my CoP and ethical responsibilities, it is important to me to uphold confidence and trust :)

BASW_UK BASW

@Ermintrude2 @DorleeM Agree with that so sensitivity and awareness to acess/inclusion vital #swscmedia

jonbolton Jon Bolton

@jaxrafferty probably, yes. In my case students were not using twitter until I suggested it. #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo

@BASW_UK @dorleem maybe depends on user group you work with #swscmedia

SWSCmedia SWSCmedia

So SM has facilitated dissemination of info… has this circulation been so much that we have reduced knowledge to soundbites? #swscmedia

ladyaka02 AnitaG.

#SWSCmedia will try and include info on my social work libguide:libguides.library.ohiou.edu/socialwork

444blackcat bc

#swscmedia i studied long before SM existed n was never short of reasons for procrastination think its great for education networking but

ukequality Donald Macaskill

@GemmaAt_CMHCSWS that’s an interstn suggestion #swscmedia

DorleeM Dorlee M

#SWSCmedia yes there is a digital divide but despite income differences etc., I have had patients living off of welfare subsidies using sm

jonbolton Jon Bolton

@jaxrafferty Interesting divide now – fb mainly for social, tw mainly for learning/networking. #swscmedia

Ermintrude2 Moo
